The essentials

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that helps your body move fluid it has been holding on to. At BMB we deliver it as an LPG endermologie® lymphatic drainage massage in Singapore, at our Orchard (Paragon) and Johor Bahru clinics.

Your lymphatic system carries fluid, waste and immune cells away from your tissues. Unlike blood, it has no pump of its own — it depends on movement, breathing and muscle action to keep going. Pregnancy, surgery, long hours on your feet and simple inactivity all slow it down. When it slows, fluid settles.

You notice it as puffy ankles, heavy legs, swollen fingers, tightness around a healing scar, or a waterlogged feeling that rest alone does not shift. Fluid retention is a normal response to a body under load. It is not something you have to sit with.

The technology

How does LPG endermologie lymphatic drainage work?

The lymphatic vessels that matter here sit just beneath the skin, which is why pressing harder does not help. LPG endermologie® uses patented mechanostimulation — gently lifting and rolling the skin fold to activate those vessels directly, at a consistent depth and rhythm.

That rhythm does two things at once. It encourages trapped fluid towards the lymph nodes where your body clears it, and it increases blood and oxygen flow through the tissue, which is what supports repair.

Most people feel the difference before they leave the room — rings turn more easily, shoes feel looser, legs feel lighter underneath them. Because the fluid then leaves through your kidneys, expect to need the bathroom more than usual for the rest of the day. That is the treatment working.

Benefits

What Manual Lymphatic Drainage does

Six changes clients most often report across the first few sessions.

  • 01

Soothes and relieves. Non-invasive healing that calms the body, reduces inflammation, and supports overall post-surgical recovery.

  • 02

Reduces swelling and fluid. Targets pre- and post-operative swelling, fluid retention and localised puffiness to shorten your healing timeline.

  • 03

Softens scar tissue. Gentle lymph stimulation promotes healthy tissue remodelling, helping soften early C-section scar tissue, release tightness and minimise deep adhesions.

  • 04

Refines and smooths contours. Paired with advanced mechanical massage, it helps smooth localised fat deposits and firm lax skin for a more sculpted silhouette.

  • 05

Lighter legs. Eases the heaviness and aching that builds through a third trimester, or after long hours upright.

  • 06

Deeply calming. The slow, repetitive rhythm settles the nervous system. A fair number of clients fall asleep.

Recovery support

Post-op recovery and C-section scar therapy

Surgery of any kind interrupts the lymphatic pathways that run through the tissue. Fluid that would normally drain away collects instead, which is why swelling after an operation can linger far longer than the incision takes to close.

Used as part of post-op recovery, lymphatic drainage helps that fluid find its way out. For mums after a caesarean, the same gentle stimulation supports healthy tissue remodelling around the scar — softening the early, tight, slightly numb feeling many describe, and helping limit the deeper adhesions that can pull uncomfortably months later.

Timing matters, and so does clearance. We do not work near a caesarean scar until it has fully healed and your doctor has signed you off. Before that point we work well away from the site, on the pathways that still help. If your surgeon has given you specific instructions, bring them — we will work to whatever they have said.

Shape and skin

Non-invasive body contouring

Draining fluid changes how a body looks as well as how it feels. Once the swelling settles, the shape underneath becomes visible again — which is why many clients describe looking slimmer after a session without having lost any weight.

Paired with LPG’s advanced mechanical massage, the same treatment supports non-invasive body contouring: smoothing localised fat deposits, improving the appearance of cellulite, and firming skin left lax after pregnancy or weight change. No needles, no incisions, no downtime.

We would rather be straight with you about what it is not. This is not a weight-loss treatment. What it moves is fluid, not fat. It refines a silhouette and supports recovery — it does not replace nutrition or exercise, and anyone promising otherwise is overselling it.

Before the session

Consultation first

Every session starts with a conversation. We go through where the swelling sits, how long it has been there, your stage of pregnancy or how long ago you gave birth, any surgery you are recovering from, and anything in your medical history that changes what is safe.

Sudden swelling, swelling on one side only, or swelling that comes with headaches or vision changes needs a doctor rather than a massage. If that is what you describe, we will say so and ask you to get checked first.

During the session

What it feels like

You will be positioned on your side or semi-reclined, supported with pillows. The therapist glides the LPG head along the drainage routes, clearing the areas nearest the lymph nodes first before working outwards. The sensation is a gentle rolling suction, not pressure.

It is far lighter than most people expect. If it feels like it is barely doing anything, that is the correct intensity. Say so at any point if you would like the pacing or position changed.

Where the work happens

Focus Areas

Most sessions concentrate on the legs, ankles and feet, because that is where gravity sends everything — water retention in the legs is the single most common reason clients come in. Hands and forearms are close behind, especially in a third trimester when rings stop fitting.

After birth the emphasis shifts. Fluid held for nine months does not leave overnight, and the body is also clearing what it retained through labour. Early postnatal sessions tend to focus on the legs and abdomen, always working around anything still healing.

Tell your therapist how you are finding it at any point. If an area is more tender than usual, the pressure and pacing get adjusted. Nothing about this treatment is meant to be uncomfortable.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

It is a gentle treatment that helps your lymphatic system move fluid that has become trapped in the tissues. Your lymphatic system carries fluid, waste and immune cells away from the body’s tissues, but unlike blood it has no pump of its own. When it slows, fluid settles and you get swelling, puffiness and heaviness. At BMB we deliver Manual Lymphatic Drainage using LPG endermologie, a patented mechanical technique that stimulates the vessels sitting just beneath the skin.

How does LPG endermologie lymphatic drainage work?

The device uses patented mechanostimulation, gently lifting and rolling the skin to activate the lymphatic vessels underneath. That mechanical rhythm encourages trapped fluid towards the lymph nodes where the body clears it, while also increasing blood flow to the area. It is non-invasive, requires no needles or downtime, and works at a depth a hand alone cannot reach consistently.

Can it help after surgery or a C-section?

It is often used to support post-operative recovery, once your surgeon or doctor has cleared you. Gentle lymph stimulation helps reduce post-surgical swelling and encourages healthy tissue remodelling, which can soften early scar tissue and ease the tightness many mums describe around a caesarean scar. We work well away from the incision until it has fully healed and you have been signed off. Always get your doctor’s clearance first.

How often should I have lymphatic drainage massage?

Most people notice a difference after a single session, but fluid that has built up over weeks responds better to a short course. One to two sessions a week is a common starting cadence, and your therapist will suggest a plan after seeing how you respond to the first one. For post-operative recovery, the timing depends entirely on your surgeon’s guidance.

Does lymphatic drainage help with weight loss?

Not directly, and we would rather be straight about that. What it moves is fluid, not fat. You may well look and feel slimmer afterwards because the swelling has gone down, and pairing it with mechanical massage can help smooth localised fat deposits and firm lax skin. But it is a body contouring and recovery treatment, not a weight-loss one.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

For most mums, yes, and it is one of the gentler options available. Every session starts with a consultation covering your stage of pregnancy and medical history, and you are positioned on your side with full pillow support. If anything in your history needs your doctor’s clearance first, we will tell you rather than proceed.

When should I avoid it?

Lymphatic drainage is not suitable if you have an active infection or fever, a known blood clot or DVT, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, or cancer currently under treatment. Sudden or one-sided swelling should be seen by a doctor before any massage, because it can point to something needing medical attention. If you are unsure, ask your doctor and we will work with whatever they advise.
